On%20October%2012%2C%202004%2C%20in%20Mahmoudiya%2C%20a%20city%20south%20of%20Baghdad%2C%20Donny%20was%20on%20a%20night%20foot%20patrol%20when%20a%20speeding%20vehicle%20opened%20fire%20on%20them%20with%20an%20AK-47.%20Donny%20was%20shot%20by%20his%20attackers%20with%20the%20bullet%20entering%20through%20his%20left%20cheekbone%20lodged%20between%20the%20base%20of%20his%20skull.%20Due%20to%20the%20location%20of%20the%20bullet%2C%20it%20was%20left%20in%20place%20by%20doctors%20because%20it%26%238217%3Bs%20too%20risky%20to%20remove.%20Donny%20has%20made%20it%20his%20mission%20to%20raise%20awareness%20and%20reach%20as%20many%20wounded%20veterans%20as%20possible.%20His%20involvement%20has%20not%20only%20helped%20with%20his%20own%20recovery%2C%20but%20he%20has%20also%20inspired%20others%20to%20remain%20resilient%20in%20their%20recovery.%20%28Submitted%20by%3A%20BABA%20%26%238211%3B%20Operation%20Finally%20Home%29

The%20AR%2038th%20BCT%20arrived%20in%20Iraq%20in%20February%202004.%20By%20April%2C%20the%20brigade%20had%20already%20suffered%20multiple%20attacks%20and%20casualties.%20May%202004%20Alan%20and%20one%20of%20his%20squads%20were%20manning%20Checkpoint%2011%20at%20the%20entrance%20of%20The%20Green%20Zone.%20While%20on%20patrol%20with%20his%20men%2C%20they%20checked%20ID%26%238217%3Bs%20of%20pedestrians%20and%20those%20driving%20vehicles%20across%20the%20bridge%20into%20the%20Green%20Zone.%20Alan%20noticed%20a%20small%20taxi%20approaching%20and%20driving%20erratically.%20As%20it%20drew%20near%2C%20he%20could%20see%20that%20it%20was%20heavily%20laden%20with%20explosives%20and%20he%20immediately%20shouted%20for%20everyone%20to%20take%20cover.%20Alan%20shot%20the%20driver%20just%20as%20he%20detonated%20the%20bomb.%20The%20engine%20block%20from%20the%20car%20landed%20on%20Alan%20on%20alan%26%238217%3Bs%20legs.%20he%20recieved%20medical%20attention%20and%20was%20transferred%20to%20Brook%20Army%20Medical%20Center%20Burn%20unit%20in%20San%20Antonio%20where%20he%20worked%20on%20his%20recovery%20for%2022%20months.%20He%20is%20now%20retired%20from%20the%20Army%20with%20his%20injuries%20and%20to%20this%20day%20misses%20the%20military%20and%20the%20men%20who%20became%20closer%20then%20family%20during%20the%20times%20they%20served%20together.%20%28Submitted%20by%3A%20BABA%20%26%238211%3B%20Operation%20Finally%20Home%29%0A

Levi%20was%20deployed%20to%20Iraq%20in%20January%202007%20after%20being%20with%20the%202nd%20Brigade%20%2F%2025th%20Infantry%20Division%20for%20only%20four%20months.%20His%20platoon%20was%20clearing%20the%20roads%20of%20enemy%20threats%20and%20IED%26%238217%3Bs%20when%20he%20was%20struck%20by%20a%20deep%20buried%20IED.%20Approximately%209%20soldiers%2C%20including%20Levi%20were%20injured%2C%20one%20was%20killed%20and%20several%20years%20later%2C%20one%20is%20still%20in%20a%20coma.%20After%20the%20explosion%20the%20unit%20was%20ambushed%20and%20medics%20were%20unable%20to%20get%20to%20them%20as%20they%20lie%20injured.%20Once%20rescued%2C%20he%20recovered%20from%20his%20broken%20back%2C%20jaw%2C%20ankle%20at%20Brook%20Army%20Medical%20Center%20in%20San%20Antonio.%20While%20in%20the%20hospital%2C%20he%20earned%20his%20Bachelor%26%238217%3Bs%20Degree%20and%20now%20currently%20pursing%20a%20career%20in%20criminal%20justice.%20%28Submitted%20by%3A%20BABA%20%26%238211%3B%20Operation%20Finally%20home%29%0A

Jorge%20joined%20the%20Army%20in%202011%20after%20eight%20years%20on%20the%20police%20force%20in%20Puerto%20Rico.%20On%20his%204th%20deployment%20to%20Afghanistan%2C%20Jorge%20and%20his%20unit%20were%20on%20the%20way%20back%20to%20camp%2C%20their%20HUMVEE%20ran%20over%20an%20anti-tank%20mine.%20Having%20taken%20the%20full%20brunt%20of%20the%20mine%2C%20Jorge%20was%20the%20only%20one%20injured%20in%20the%20explosion.%20He%20lost%20his%20right%20leg%20immediately%20in%20the%20explosion%20and%20his%20left%20leg%20was%20severely%20injured.%20After%20his%20long%20recovery%2C%20he%20returned%20to%20law%20enforcement%20and%20worked%20for%20the%20Department%20Of%20Defense.%20Since%20his%20recovery%2C%20Jorge%20has%20raised%20awareness%20and%20inspired%20other%20wounded%20veterans%20to%20remain%20hopeful%2C%20even%20in%20times%20of%20extreme%20distress%20and%20isolation.%20Jorge%26%238217%3Bs%20story%20is%20one%20of%20perseverance%20that%20can%20be%20a%20model%20for%20those%20going%20through%20similar%20situations.%20%28Submitted%20by%3A%20BABA%20%26%238211%3B%20Operation%20Finally%20Home%29

Cpl%20Baskin%20was%20born%20May%2012%2C%201989%20from%20that%20day%20forward%20he%20always%20worked%20hard%20to%20achieve%20what%20he%20was%20working%20towards.%20He%20crawled%20at%20a%20very%20early%20age%20walked%20at%20a%20even%20earlier%20age%20ran%20before%20I%20know%20what%20was%20happening%20and%20began%20school%20with%20the%20attitude%20one%20day%20he%20would%20be%20something%20amazing%20and%20do%20something%20special.%20He%20has%20always%20loved%20helping%20people.%20Once%20we%20were%20driving%20down%20a%20major%20road%20and%20there%20was%20a%20McDonalds%20and%20he%20asked%20if%20he%20could%20have%20two%20cheeseburgers.%20Even%20with%20us%20running%20late%20for%20our%20meeting%20I%20pulled%20into%20the%20drive-thru%20and%20got%20him%20his%20burgers.%20As%20we%20pulled%20out%20into%20the%20street%20we%20were%20caught%20by%20the%20red%20light%20I%20looked%20over%20before%20I%20knew%20it%20he%20had%20jumped%20out%20of%20the%20car%20and%20gave%20one%20of%20his%20cheese%20burgers%20to%20a%20homeless%20man%20standing%20in%20the%20median%20holding%20a%20sign%20asking%20for%20help%20he%20was%20a%20vet%20and%20injured%20unable%20to%20work.%20He%20was%20only%207%20at%20the%20time.%20Tears%20filled%20my%20eyes%20with%20such%20PRIDE%20that%20my%20son%20was%20so%20loving%20and%20caring%20for%20the%20unfortunate.%20Jumping%20ahead%20to%20High%20School%20he%20hated%20it%2C%20was%20always%20a%20struggle%20to%20get%20him%20up%20out%20of%20bed%20and%20to%20school%20%26%238211%3B%20a%20fight%20every%20day%20until%20he%20turned%2017.%20His%20brother%20had%20just%20graduated%20from%20High%20School%20and%20joined%20the%20United%20States%20Army%20as%20he%20was%20the%20Grandson%20of%20a%20Retired%20Lieutenant%20Commander%20who%20served%2025%20yrs%20and%20traveled%20many%20places%20so%20the%20military%20was%20in%20his%20blood.%20On%20or%20around%20his%2017th%20birthday%20he%20came%20to%20me%20and%20in%20such%20an%20adult%20voice%20asked%20Mama%20I%20really%20would%20like%20to%20quit%20school%20obtain%20my%20GED%20and%20join%20the%20United%20States%20Army.%20Knowing%20how%20much%20I%20too%20hated%20school%20yet%20fought%20my%20way%20through%20to%20the%20end%20know%20it%20was%20not%20something%20that%20Cpl%20Baskin%20was%20going%20to%20do%20therefore%20I%20hesitantly%20agreed%20and%20signed%20away.%20One%20important%20part%20of%20this%20story%20is%20that%20Cpl%20Baskin%20grew%20up%20fast%20due%20to%20the%20many%20abusive%20relationships%20his%20mother%20had%20endured%20over%20the%20years%20and%20knew%20how%20NOT%20to%20treat%20the%20ones%20that%20you%20love.%20So%20with%20tears%20flowing%20down%20my%20face%20and%20a%20tight%20grip%20around%20his%20neck%20I%20gave%20him%20one%20last%20baby%20hug%20he%20was%20going%20to%20be%20coming%20home%20a%20MAN%20not%20just%20a%20MAN%20but%20a%20Soldier%20that%20wants%20to%20put%20his%20life%20on%20the%20line%20for%20his%20country%20and%20what%20he%20believes%20in.%20He%20helps%20his%20mother%20out%20every%20month%20and%20worries%20about%20her%20as%20much%20as%20he%20does%20keeping%20himself%20safe%20at%20war.%20You%20see%2C%20Cpl%20Baskins%20mother%20suffers%20from%20Severe%20Bipolar%2C%20Anorexia%2C%20Bulemia%2C%20PTSD%20from%20years%20and%20years%20of%20abuse%20mental%20physical%20and%20emotional.%20He%20has%20won%20a%20few%20awards%20and%20is%20currently%20deployed%20in%20Afghanistan%20on%20his%20second%20tour.%20He%20is%20planning%20a%20trip%20to%20Miami%20Florida%20during%20his%20tour%20break%20in%20August%20and%20is%20in%20fact%20paying%20the%20way%20for%20several%20of%20his%20fellow%20soldiers%20aka%20friends%20allowing%20them%20to%20be%20able%20to%20join%20in%20as%20they%20to%20have%20become%20a%20part%20of%20his%20family%20and%20Cpl%20Baskin%20will%20tell%20you%20FAMILY%20COMES%20BEFORE%20ANYTHING.%20So%20Cpl%20Baskin%2C%20Blake%20Andrew%20I%20want%20to%20say%20thank%20you%20for%20being%20the%20person%20you%20have%20become%20the%20MAN%20you%20are%20growing%20to%20be%20and%20the%20dedication%20to%20all%20you%20care%20about%20most%20importantly%20your%20family%20and%20close%20friends.%20So%20I%20Dawn%20Kimberly%20Smith%20Zajicek%20am%20PROUD%20to%20say%20I%20am%20the%20Mother%20of%20not%20one%20but%20two%20heros%20that%20served%20and%20still%20serving%20for%20our%20great%20country%20and%20what%20we%20believe%20in.%20Hooah.%20%20%28Submitted%20by%3A%20Dawn%20K%20Zajicek%29%0A
