SSgt Hess is a single mom of 5 year old twins, and has been an Air Force Medic for nearly 10 years. Last year she came off active duty orders so she could go full time to nursing school, and she currently serves in the Texas ANG part time, working for a reconnaissance squadron. She had to leave her children for nearly 8 months in 2009 to serve in Afghanistan, but she was proud to do it, and told me that she wished she could do more, which is why she intends on becoming a trauma nurse. Justin Legg - Navy Seal; LT

Justin is a true american hero and should be an inspiration to anyone that thinks they have it tough. After graduating from the Naval Academy, Justin entered BUDS/Seal Training and his class 234 was featured on the Discovery Channel. Most men don't make it through once but Justin was rolled back because of a 24 hour virus and thus had start over again with 234. Justin served combat tours in Iraq, Afghanistan and several covert missions in other countries around the world. Now for overcoming adversity. Justin and his wife lost their home to Hurricane Katrina, Justin received a bone marrow transplant and beat Leukemia and make it back to active duty. To top it all off while getting back into shape for active duty he suffered a collapsed lung from a botched medical procedure. He has since received a double lung transplant and continues to inspire by completing a 1/2 marathon and climbing Denali. Rudy De Leon Jr - 25th Infantry; SSG/E-6

SSG Rudy De Leon Jr. US Army Retired 25th Infantry Divison-Houston, Texas 1997-2010. I am honored to salute my husband Rudy De Leon Jr. He served his country proudly and almost lost his life several times. He knew since an early age the army is where he wanted to be and make a career in it.straight out of high school he then joined the Army. He enjoyed his army life and was so proud to be where he was. He took pride in all he did. Rudy was given an early retirement, unfortunately due to several injuries consisting of head trauma, back injuries, and more. Rudy was hurt after a suicidal car bomb attempt. Rudy not only was injured but saved several of his men at the same time-he risked his life in order to save others. He was presented the purple heart along with numerous awards and certificates. He suffers daily with agonizing pains throughout his head and body but never gives up. He deals with so much mentally, emotionally and physically and never gives up taking care of his family and our needs. He is left with many fond memories of his army years along with life changing memories- but he will never forget that horrific day he was injured almost losing his life. But yet-left up to him he would do all over again if given the chance-He loves his country- He is an AMAZING & COURAGEOUS MAN. I am so proud to call him my husband & my TROOPER! Smith was a devoted Son, friend since he was old enough to. He joined the Army about a year after he graduated took time off for himself and his friends before going. Unfortunately, he got a medical discharge NOT LONG AGO. However, did more than his part during his 4 years service. The picture of him and his fellow soldier best friend, Cory Shea, that got killed with several others. Smith and Shea were so tight, they agreed if anything should ever happen to Shea, Smith would take care of his family. So after his death, not to mention what it did to my son emotionally, he in fact did do as he requested. Last year even went to his grave site to put closure in his life and give him flowers. SSG Andrew Trevino - Army; E6

SSG Andrew Trevino is my loving husband who has served his country for almost 10yrs and is on his 3rd deployment in Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne Division. After graduating basic and AIT he was sent on his first deployment from Ft.Bliss..From there he served with the 101st Airborne at Ft. Campbell and made his 2nd deployment with them to Iraq. Donny Daughenbaugh - Corporal, Marine Corps

On October 12, 2004, in Mahmoudiya, a city south of Baghdad, Donny was on a night foot patrol when a speeding vehicle opened fire on them with an AK-47. Donny was shot by his attackers with the bullet entering through his left cheekbone lodged between the base of his skull. Due to the location of the bullet, it was left in place by doctors because it's too risky to remove. Donny has made it his mission to raise awareness and reach as many wounded veterans as possible. His involvement has not only helped with his own recovery, but he has also inspired others to remain resilient in their recovery. (Submitted by: BABA - Operation Finally Home)

Alan Hornaday - Sergeant, United States Army

The AR 38th BCT arrived in Iraq in February 2004. By April, the brigade had already suffered multiple attacks and casualties. May 2004 Alan and one of his squads were manning Checkpoint 11 at the entrance of The Green Zone. While on patrol with his men, they checked ID's of pedestrians and those driving vehicles across the bridge into the Green Zone. Alan noticed a small taxi approaching and driving erratically. As it drew near, he could see that it was heavily laden with explosives and he immediately shouted for everyone to take cover. Alan shot the driver just as he detonated the bomb. The engine block from the car landed on Alan on alan's legs. he recieved medical attention and was transferred to Brook Army Medical Center Burn unit in San Antonio where he worked on his recovery for 22 months. He is now retired from the Army with his injuries and to this day misses the military and the men who became closer then family during the times they served together. Hugo Gonzalez - Specialist, United States Army

June 21, 2004 while on patrol in Iraq, Hugo Gonzalez and his unit were ambushed and hit by an IED. At the time, Hugo was the gunner in a non-armored vehicle. He suffered a brain injury, the loss of his right eye and shrapnel in his left eye leaving him with permanent blurred vision and wounds over 80% of his body. He currently lives with his wife and his three daughters. Today more than ever, Hugo counts on the values he learned in the Army to give him strength and determination to succeed in life. Johnny Wilson - Sergeant, United States Army (ret)

Johnny was deployed for his first otur in Iraq in June 2004. He was injured and came home to recover. He returned for his second deployment in December of 2004 to Taji, Iraq. Christopher LeBleu - Corporal, Marine Corps

Chris joined the Marines in 2003. He served in OIF II with the 3rd Battalion 7th Marines. After his battle in Iraq, he safely returned home and got married. Toby "Levi" Wilson - Sergeant, United States Army

Levi was deployed to Iraq in January 2007 after being with the 2nd Brigade / 25th Infantry Division for only four months. His platoon was clearing the roads of enemy threats and IED's when he was struck by a deep buried IED. Approximately 9 soldiers, including Levi were injured, one was killed and several years later, one is still in a coma. After the explosion the unit was ambushed and medics were unable to get to them as they lie injured. Once rescued, he recovered from his broken back, jaw, ankle at Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio. While in the hospital, he earned his Bachelor's Degree and now currently pursing a career in criminal justice. (Submitted by: BABA - Operation Finally home)

Steven Schulz - Lance Corporal, Marine Corps

Steven was five months into his second tour in Iraq when he was seriously injured outside of Fallujahin April of 2005. His HUMVEE encountered a IED placed by insurgents and he was seriously wounded. Schrapnel entered his brain around his right eye. With the actions of his fellow Marines and Navy Corpsman, he survived the attack. (Submitted by BABA Operation Finally Home)

T. Erasmo Valles - 1st Lt, United States Marine Corp

David Worswick - SSgt, Marine Corps (ret)

David was on a mission in Assadbad, Afghanistan to confront insurgents that have attacked his post. While in route, David's convoy was ambushed and his vehicle was hit by a road side bomb. The impact left David seriously injured and he still managed to assist one of his fellow marines to stay alive during combat. David was medically retired with numerous spinal injuries and PTSD. Jorge DeLeon - Sergeant, United States Army

Jorge joined the Army in 2011 after eight years on the police force in Puerto Rico. On his 4th deployment to Afghanistan, Jorge and his unit were on the way back to camp, their HUMVEE ran over an anti-tank mine. Having taken the full brunt of the mine, Jorge was the only one injured in the explosion. He lost his right leg immediately in the explosion and his left leg was severely injured. After his long recovery, he returned to law enforcement and worked for the Department Of Defense. Since his recovery, Jorge has raised awareness and inspired other wounded veterans to remain hopeful, even in times of extreme distress and isolation. Lee Kendrick - Specialist, Army Infantry

He joined to be a part of a noble cause to protect his country and those he loved. He contracted a deadly parasite in his lungs and was life-flighted to Walter Reed Medical Center in April of 2010 at the age of 19. We almost lost him, but were fortunate that he survived. Adam Bozant - C5, US NAVY

He is a very proud sailor. Since he joined in September of 2006 he has done all that has been required and then some. On his last deployment to Persian Gulf there was a problem with his sustem and the part was to be waiting in Bahrain needed to be fixed asap and while everyone else enjoyed a much deserved liberty he stayed on board his destroyer and found the problem fixed it and they where on schedule when it was time to leave. Blake Baskin - Army; Cpl

Cpl Baskin was born May 12, 1989 from that day forward he always worked hard to achieve what he was working towards. He crawled at a very early age walked at a even earlier age ran before I know what was happening and began school with the attitude one day he would be something amazing and do something special. He has always loved helping people. Once we were driving down a major road and there was a McDonalds and he asked if he could have two cheeseburgers. Even with us running late for our meeting I pulled into the drive-thru and got him his burgers. As we pulled out into the street we were caught by the red light I looked over before I knew it he had jumped out of the car and gave one of his cheese burgers to a homeless man standing in the median holding a sign asking for help he was a vet and injured unable to work. He was only 7 at the time. Tears filled my eyes with such PRIDE that my son was so loving and caring for the unfortunate. Jumping ahead to High School he hated it, was always a struggle to get him up out of bed and to school - a fight every day until he turned 17. His brother had just graduated from High School and joined the United States Army as he was the Grandson of a Retired Lieutenant Commander who served 25 yrs and traveled many places so the military was in his blood. On or around his 17th birthday he came to me and in such an adult voice asked Mama I really would like to quit school obtain my GED and join the United States Army. Knowing how much I too hated school yet fought my way through to the end know it was not something that Cpl Baskin was going to do therefore I hesitantly agreed and signed away. One important part of this story is that Cpl Baskin grew up fast due to the many abusive relationships his mother had endured over the years and knew how NOT to treat the ones that you love. So with tears flowing down my face and a tight grip around his neck I gave him one last baby hug he was going to be coming home a MAN not just a MAN but a Soldier that wants to put his life on the line for his country and what he believes in. He helps his mother out every month and worries about her as much as he does keeping himself safe at war. You see, Cpl Baskins mother suffers from Severe Bipolar, Anorexia, Bulemia, PTSD from years and years of abuse mental physical and emotional. He has won a few awards and is currently deployed in Afghanistan on his second tour. He is planning a trip to Miami Florida during his tour break in August and is in fact paying the way for several of his fellow soldiers aka friends allowing them to be able to join in as they to have become a part of his family and Cpl Baskin will tell you FAMILY COMES BEFORE ANYTHING. So Cpl Baskin, Blake Andrew I want to say thank you for being the person you have become the MAN you are growing to be and the dedication to all you care about most importantly your family and close friends. Erik Moore - Army; Staff Seargent

Erik is a 2000 graduate of Cy-Fair High School he joined the Army directly after high school. He is currently on his 3rd tour in Iraq. He has 3 beautiful daughters, with one just being 6 weeks old. She is an extraordinary girl who loves what she's doing even though she's just begun. She has a hard time being away from home but I think she's doing okay. James & Tracy Tipton - Navy & Navy Veteran; E-5 & E-4

James is an AO2 and has worked with many people. He builds bombs and loads them on air crafts. He was stationed in CA and is now in Tx as a recruiter. He is getting re-stationed to Virginia in dec with his wife (Navy Veteran) and three kids. Tracy Tipton is Prior Navy and was a BM3 which made sure the ship was ready to go underway. She was stationed in Virginia and got out to take care of there kids. She is now a navy veteran and proud support of her husband AO2 Tipton. SFC Terry Rancher and SPC Shelby Rancher; Army

I salute both my soldiers. My husband, SFC Terry Rancher, is currently preparing for retirement after 20 yrs active duty. My daughter, SPC Shelby Rancher, who is currently stationed at Ft Lewis Washington working as a Radiology Tech. As one is ending their career as an active duty soldier the other one is just beginning. I hope the Army brings my daughter, SPC Shelby Rancher, as much joy and adventure as it has brought her father and I. A Salute to them both from a proud Army Wife and a proud Army Mom.
