This is groundbreaking for the State of Texas. House Bill 62 was signed by Governor Gregg Abbott today which makes it illegal to read, write or send a text while driving.
The bill does allow you to use the phone when stopped on the road. The new law goes into effect September 1st.
This is great for us as motorists in theory but in reality I don’t see it stopping the texting and driving epidemic in our country. In my opinion, this will be an “add-0n” to the already small citations that many motorists receive. The ticket will cost between $25 and $99 dollars.
In my imagination, I see someone being pulled over for a taillight or a seat belt violation and then the officer tacking on the cell phone fee, as well.
Unfortunately, too many people are glued to their phones 24/7 including when they’re behind the wheel. If we really want to stop texting and driving we’re going to need some sort of advanced technology that disables text message when the phone detects that it’s travelling above a certain speed or travelling at all.
