According to this report, a 7 year old student in Arlington was behaving erratically during the week of standardized testing and it resulted in drastic measures taken by on campus security. The parents say their child suffers from ADHD and claims that the punishment turned violent after he had banged his head against a wall.
The child vividly described feeling like he was being shocked and the parents’ attorney claims he saw bruising on his legs and what they believe to be tazer marks on his back. The school’s security officers allegedly handcuffed the child and took him to a mental health facility without notifying the family first.
This is absolutely sickening. There are many things wrong with this situation but one of the most grotesque is the cuffing of the child. I don’t know how dangerous a 7 year old boy can be to two grown security officers but cuffing seems extremely drastic. The photo on the news article clearly shows the child in handcuffs.
Then, to think that he was beaten or tazed seems shocking to me. I know, we shouldn’t underestimate the power and angst that a child may be create when resisting authority but there has to be some other means of restraint. I’d prefer the officers sit on him or hold him on the ground over a tazer or hitting him with batons.
I have a feeling this story is inevitably going to be rolling through the national news outlets before long. The school refused comment due to federal regulations and guidelines.
