Time for our “CAN I GET AN AMEN” story of the day! At “THE MORNING BULL” we believe in the power of positivity. We believe there are more good people than bad in the world, and we believe that goodness should be celebrated when you find it!
In October 2014, Carl Phelps and his daughter Jennifer were at a football game, after the game Jennifer called her mom and asked she had noticed “… that dad is slurring when he speaks?”.
Her mom said she hadn’t noticed anything. She wondered if her husband had just been talking with a mouth full of sunflower seeds, but she started paying more attention. Soon, she, too, noticed he was struggling to talk.
Fast forward to April 2015, Phelps visited his doctor and learned he had bulbar-onset ALS, which affects the throat, making it difficult to swallow, speak and breathe. In the two years since being diagnosed, Carl has lost his ability to talk, and he can’t write, sign or type.
Well, this past January, Carl and his wife they went to a support group meeting where they saw students from Oklahoma Christian University who said they were building their own eye-gaze communication system..where ALS patients could use a computer voice program to speak – but the students needed someone to help them test it and perfect it.
So Carl Volunteered and in just a few months he has helped them make the system work and a couple of weeks ago when they demonstrated the system – the first thing Carl did was say “I love you” to his wife, Janice.
Janice said Carl takes his job as a tester very seriously. He has helped them add common phrases like: “These are happy tears”, “I feel great”
She said the impact on Carl’s life has been not short of a miracle. “Carl said one thing that he feels is really important is that he gets to tell me that he loves me,” Janice said. “I can’t begin to tell you how important it is to communicate with him.
The other blessing in this, most systems like this cost $30,000 dollars or more – but the students plan to sell their system for $3,000.
So where ever you are in the kitchen or in the car…can throw your hand in the air, “CAN I GET AN AMEN” for this … Always focused on the good news, and if you ever see a story that would make a great amen email it in at George@thebullhouston.com
