“This coal miner’s daughter gave voice to a generation,” President Barack Obama said of Loretta Lynn earlier today (Nov. 20).

Loretta Lynn was honored today at the White House with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The singer is being awarded as “one of the first successful female country music vocalists in the early 1960s, courageously breaking barriers in an industry long dominated by men.”

Lynn is detailing the day’s events on her Facebook page, posting images of herself arriving at the White House and with President Obama.

Alongside Lynn, other females honored this year include Oprah Winfrey, feminist trailblazer Gloria Steinem, and the late Sally Ride, the first American female astronaut to travel to space. Bill Clinton is among the males honored, as well as jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval. Complete list of recipients can be found here.
