Former teen star of the show “Facts of Life” Lisa Whelchel is a contender on “Survivor: Philippines”, braving the elements and battling mother nature to win a $1 million prize; however, there is a new fight that is taking precedence and the battle that Whelchel is fighting is with West Nile Virus.

Whelchel, who was diagnosed with West Nile Virus recently, took to her Twitter page to let fans know of her condition. She also wrote on her page that she is in good spirits, despite her diagnosis.

Dr. just called with blood test results…I have West Nile. Ugh. I’m fine, just tired. Takes a year to recover.

West Nile Virus is a disease that is spread by infected mosquitoes. Its symptoms include fatigue, headaches, body aches, rash and fever. It is not clear whether Whelchel contracted the illness while filming the CBS’ reality series.

Individuals who contract West Nile Virus can seek medical attention and health care providers will prescribe treatment for the disease. There is, however, no treatment for West Nile itself. Those with suppressed immune systems who have the virus are at special risk.
