Not a lot of marriages make it to 40 years, especially in the life of celebrities. Although George Strait is no typical celebrity or superstar. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]George Strait[/lastfm] and his wife Norma will celebrate a marriage milestone over the weekend. Let’s take a look at their life together.
The high-school sweethearts eloped to Mexico, December, 4th 1971, but a few weeks later exchanged vows at a church in Pearsall, Texas.
“Norma was the first girl I ever loved. We knew each other forever, growing up in a small town,” George says. “I never really even thought anything about her, but then one day I asked her out and we went on a date. We didn’t see each other for a long time after that. Then one day, I thought, ‘I’m missing the boat here,’ and we started dating again.”
George enlisted for the U.S. Army in 1971 and was stationed in Hawaii at Schofield Barracks as a part of the 25th Infantry division. There he began performing with an Army-sponsored band, “Rambling Country.”
There in Hawaii is where George and Norma welcomed their first child Jenifer, who later died in a car accident at the age of 13 in 1986.
In 1981, the couple welcomed their son George Strait Jr. also known as “Bubba”. “Bubba” pursued a career in PRCA team roping. He also has turned to music and currently writes songs for dad’s albums.
George and Norma are expecting their first grand-child in February.
